Technical Information
Tinopal® ABP-A Liquid
Although Tinopal ABP-A Liquid has
medium to high affinity for cellulose, the
whiteness depends on the treatment
time and the consistency of the furnish.
The best effect is obtained if the product
is dosed at a point where the furnish is
of high consistency. This is particularly
important if soft water is being used.
Dosing rate:
0.05 – 1.5 % Tinopal ABP-A Liquid
(based on the weight of bone dry
cellulose)
Tinopal ABP-A Liquid at the size
press
Tinopal ABP-A Liquid performs well with
the conventional starch qualities used at
the size press. It can be used together
with CMC, PVA, and anionic and
weakly cationic synthetic sizing agents.
Its effectiveness is influenced by the pH
of the base paper. The best effects are
obtained if the pH of the base paper is
above 5.
If the pH of the starch is below 5.0,
we would recommend using
Tinopal SPP-Z liquid or Tinopal ASP
Liquid.
It is preferable to add Tinopal ABP-A
Liquid undiluted to the ready-prepared
size-press liquor.
Dosing rate:
0.5 – 12 g/l size-press liquor

Optical brightening in the wet end
Tinopal ABP-A Liquid is an economical
OBA to be used in sized, unfilled and
filled papers and boards at pH 4 – 9 as
well as in unsized papers, provided
water hardness is above 50 ppm CaO.
Optical brightening at the size press
Tinopal ABP-A Liquid works well in
starch based size press solutions, and
also in combination with CMC, PVA and
synthetic binders.
Optical brightening in the coating
Tinopal ABP-A Liquid is used in coating
mixes containing combinations of
natural and synthetic binders and the
usual pigments at pH 7 – 11 for low to
medium whiteness. The OBA effect is
largely dependent on the type and
amount of co-binder used, such as
starch, CMC, PVA, etc.
How to use
Tinopal ABP-A Liquid in the wet end
Tinopal ABP-A Liquid can be added
either batchwise in the pulper or the
mixing chest or continuously at suitable
dosing points in the stock preparation
system.
Care must be taken that the product is
applied prior to either alum or cationic
auxiliaries.
Chemical nature
Diamino stilbene disulphonic acid
derivate.
Physical form: clear, yellow liquid
Ionic charge: anionic
Features
Tinopal ABP-A Liquid is a
tetrasulfonated Optical Brightening
Agent (OBA) for paper. It is universal
OBA i.e. can be used in all applications
(wet end, size press and coating) and
the formulation is urea free. Tinopal
ABP-A Liquid is the most economical
OBA for low to medium whiteness
levels.
Technical data
Viscosity < 50 mPas
pH value 8.0 - 10.5
Density Approx. 1.12

This information only indicates a typical
property of the product and MUST NOT be
taken as specification.
Tinopal ABP-A Liquid in the coating
OBAs of the diaminostilbene
disulphonic acid derivative class do not
have adequate affinity for coating
pigments and synthetic latices
based on copolymers of acrylic acid
ester or butadiene styrene. To achieve
the best effects with OBAs, co-binders
are essential as carriers.
Suitable carriers for Tinopal ABP-A
Liquid are (in order of decreasing
effectiveness) PVA, CMC, starch and
synthetic cobinders.
Dosing rate:
0.5 – 2.0 php (parts), based on
Pigment
Storage
Tinopal ABP-A Liquid shows a high
level of stability, if stored above 5 °C.
Prolonged storage in temperatures
below 0 °C can result in product
freezing. Frozen product can be
restored to its original state without
loss of effectiveness by leaving to
stand at room temperature or heating
briefly to temperatures no higher
than 50 °C.
Storage stability: 12 months
