Appl icat ions
Fluorescent whitening in the furnish
Tinopal UP Liquid is highly suitable for
fluorescent whitening in the furnish at
slightly acid or neutral pH. The product
provides particular advantages if soft
water is used and uptake times are
short. Tinopal UP Liquid is especially
recommended for addition to furnishes
containing large proportions of mechanical
pulp or secondary fibre.
Fluorescent whitening at the size
press
We do not recommend the use of Tinopal
UP Liquid for this application.
Fluorescent whitening in surface
coatings
Tinopal UP Liquid is preferably incorporated
in coating mixes together with
casein/latex or protein/latex also in
conjunction with synthetic co-binders.
Tinopal UP Liquid in the wet end
Tinopal UP Liquid has outstanding
affinity and is very effective in unsized
papers. It has also been noted for its
good affinity even under very soft water
conditions (<7° G. h. or < 70 ppm CaO).
Largely unaffected by cationic substances,
it can readily be used for papers
sized with synthetic additives.
The product is particularly suitable for
fluorescent whitening in acid sized
loaded papers at a pH level of 4.8 – 6.5
and has considerable advantages over
tetrasulpho products when used in
amounts of less than 0.4 %.
Tinopal UP Liquid can be dispensed
intermittently at either the pulper or the
mixing chest. It should always be added
before the alum and never together with
alum or other additives.
With its high affinity, Tinopal UP Liquid
is the product of choice for continuous
dosing, including at a point where the
stock is of low consistency.
Average dosage: 0.05 to 1.5 % at pH 5
and above 0.05 to 0.6 % at pH 4.8 and
below
TINOPAL UP Liquid at the size press
As stated above, Tinopal UP Liquid is
not the ideal product for size press application.
The amount of Tiopal UP Liquid
that can be applied by this route is
limited to 4g/l size press liquor and provides
only a moderate increase of
whiteness. For FWA at the size press
we recommend using a Tinopal ABP
type or a Tinopal SPP type product.
Tinopal UP Liquid in surface coating
Excellent results can be obtained by
applying Tinopal UP Liquid in coating
mixes based on casein or protein as cobinders.
The best effects are achieved with coating
mixes containing synthetic cobinders
and latex.
Tinopal UP Liquid should not be used in
coating compounds with starch as
binder.


For these applications we recommend
using a Tinopal ABP type,
Tinopal SPP type or Tinopal SK
Slurry.
Average dosage: 0.1 to 2.0 parts
Tinopal UP Liquid (based on the
pigment) 0.05 to 0.6 % for newsprint
and SC- paper (based on the weight
of dry cellulose)
Storage:
Tinopal UP Liquid has good stability
to storage and cold temperatures.
Prolonged storage at temperatures
below -10 °C can result in product
freezing. Frozen product can be
restored to its original state without
loss of effectiveness by leaving to
stand at room temperature or heating
briefly to temperatures no higher
than 50 °C.
Bulk storage tanks should be preferably
equipped with a stirrer.
